This Week’s Episode: Norman’s Bistro, Leadbelly, and Birchwood Kitchen

Leadbelly

Hello!

This episode had me running from one side of the city to the next to check out the recommendations of this week’s guest reviewers. It was a fun episode for me since I had not already been to any of the recommended spots – something that has never happened before this episode! Norman’s Bistro took me to the south side and introduced me this neighborhood gem in Kenwood that’s known for its gumbo. Tune in tonight to learn how they put their signature stamp on this hearty stew.

Norman’s Bistro

Then I headed over to Portage Park to Leadbelly. This burger place has been on my list to try ever since a guest from last season gave me the tip after we shot our conversation in the WTTW studios. These burgers are definitely not for the dainty eater, so be sure to go with an appetite. I love the name, and despite the fact that you may feel like you literally have a “lead belly” if you go for the burger, souped-up fries, and a spiked-milkshake, the name was actually inspired by the American folk and blues singer Huddie William Ledbetter, aka “Leadbelly.” The music theme is carried throughout the decor with rock music trivial pursuit cards on each table to play while waiting for your order. Their house-ground meat blend includes pork belly to give extra flavor and juiciness to their burgers and their bread is baked in-house (and has developed a cult following). Everyone has their favorite burger joint, whether it’s a restaurant that has been showcased on Check, Please!Au Cheval, Lockdown, Edzo’s – or elsewhere. Either way, people (especially Chicagoans!) are pretty passionate about their burgers. Check out Leadbelly, and let us know how it stacks up!

Birchwood Kitchen

Lastly I ended up in Wicker Park at the neighborhood cafe Birchwood Kitchen. I was filming in the summer and their backyard patio was the perfect place for me to sit and relax while I reviewed the notes I had taken from my restaurant visits. I’m not sure about you, but I am ready for warm weather and outdoor patios! But so long as it’s still chilly out, be sure to get comfy on the couch and tune into tonight’s episode!  I’ll see you then!

Cheers,
Catherine
