Nantucket Scallops Make a Splash in the Midwest

When you think of November foods, scallops aren’t likely the first thing to come to mind. Monopolized by turkey, pumpkin pie, gravy, and stuffing, the holiday season tends to fall into a predictable paradigm, when really there’s a whole sea of seasonal delicacies out there that are just as deserving of your attention and appetite. One such specialty is Nantucket Cape scallops, a divine and slightly sweet type of scallop that splashes into season early November and runs until temperatures and catch levels allot.

Courtesy of Fortune Fish & Gourmet, the preeminent purveyor of all things nautical and beyond for the Midwest, Nantucket Cape scallops have made their debut on menus throughout Chicagoland, sweetening up dishes with their innate saccharine qualities and silky texture. They’re also incredibly versatile to cook with as far as fish and shellfish go, endearing them to a wide pantheon of preparations in all sorts of restaurant settings.

Look for them in all their divine simplicity at Shaw’s Crab House, a go-to for supreme seafood in all forms. Here, they’re seared and served with greens and rice, allowing the natural flavors of the scallops to shine front-and-center. At Blackbird, the scallops get the elegant treatment in the form of seared scallops with roasted chestnuts, pickled persimmons, spiced cocoa nibs, and tarragon.

The scallops can also currently be found on menus at Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse, Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba, Hotel Baker, and more.
