Humboldt Park Cools Down With New Ice Cream Shops

There are a couple new ice cream shops to scream for in Humboldt Park these days, with the arrival of Ruth & Phils Gourmet Ice Cream and Spinning J.

What started out as a wholesale business has steadily evolved to become the newest sweets spot on the border of Humboldt Park and Ukrainian Village. Ruth & Phils Gourmet Ice Cream developed local renown as a purveyor for upscale, wholesome ice cream at spots like Olivia’s Market, Dill Pickle Co-op, and Goddess and Grocer. Now the vendor is ready to branch out on its own with a sunny new ice cream shop on Chicago Avenue. The company’s first permanent location serves as home base for further wholesale and retail, now affording customers the opportunity to get scoops and sundaes direct from the source. True to its name, the gourmet ice cream shop elevates the ice cream norm with flavors like sea salt caramel, Lagunitas ale, toasted sweet cream, and Chicago coffee made with Dark Matter coffee, located a block away. Sundaes come topped with optional sauces like strawberry-rhubarb sauce, dark chocolate sauce, and passion fruit caramel.

About a half mile away from Ruth & Phils is Spinning J, a slick new retro throwback modeled after nostalgic soda fountains of Americana yore. Soda fountain drinks and pies are the bill of fare at this cafe, situated at the nexus of Augusta and California, one of the hottest intersections in the area for developing retail and restaurants. The shop comes courtesy of Dinah Grossman, founder of Cheap Tart Bakery, a farmers’ market favorite that also evolved into its own full-fledged brick and mortar via Spinning J.
