Windy City BBQ Classic

Summer is at its end, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to stoke those barbecue cravings. The Windy City BBQ Classic is back on September 12, marking one of the largest food events of the year. In its fourth year, the event plans to host upwards of 70 pit masters and thousands of attendees.

Taking place at the south parking lots of Soldier Field from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm, the big new facet this year is that the Classic is officially a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned championship. This means the overall winner is qualified to compete in the Jack Daniel’s Invitational and American Royal World Series of Barbecue. Competitors are due to cook meat for a panel of 70 judges, each team is vying for ultimate glory as Grand Champion. Other awards will be doled out for things like Best Chicken, Best Brisket, and Best Ribs, critiqued on appearance, texture, and flavor.

Another new component this year is the Grand Tour of American BBQ. Limited to the first 500 people, this experience grants VIP guests complete access to “pit master alley,” along with regional samples of BBQ from the city’s top purveyors and restaurants. There will also be craft beer, cocktails, a whole hog butchering demo, live music, raffles, and more.

All proceeds from the Classic benefit Operation BBQ, a non-profit corporation founded in response to relief efforts needed for tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri.
