How to Make Cocktails and Fried Desserts

School is back in session, and this week’s lessons involve deep-fried desserts and craft cocktails. Now that’s a curriculum we can support. Within the next few days, Zed451 and The Barrelhouse Flat are conducting two very unique tutorials on fried desserts and cocktails, respectively. Sure you could just haunt these places to get your fix, but it helps to have the knowledge, in case you want to whip up something special at home to impress guests or just comfort yourself.

On Saturday, August 10, Zed451 pastry chef Kate Milashus plays teacher at her latest “Confections With Kate” class. The order of the day is “Foodie Fun With Fried Desserts,” and it’s a lesson you won’t want to be truant for. Starting at 2:00 pm, Milashus will discuss and demo fried desserts, including doughnut holes, apple fritters, and funnel cakes. Rather than milk cartons and juice boxes, students will be welcomed with lavender-gin martinis. Following the demo and drinking, guests will be able to sample said desserts, and walk away with a take-home treat. Class space is understandably limited, so hop to it.

If you’re a fan of the masterful cocktails at The Barrelhouse Flat, then make your way to the Lincoln Park bar on August 13 for a lesson on how to make some of their most popular drinks. Head bartender Greg Buttera leads the class, teaching students about five of Barrelhouse’s staple drinks: an Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Daiquiri, Pisco Sour, and French 75. While mixing and sipping, attendees will enjoy bites from chef Erik Chizeck. The takeaway swag bag is pretty sweet, including the bar’s classic cocktail book containing a myriad of drink recipes, a bottle of the bar’s house bitters, and a home bar guide crafted by Barrelhouse owner Stephen Cole. Class is in session from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm, and space is expected to fill up quickly.
