Burger News for Burger Month

May is National Burger Month, because if there’s any food that signifies a post-winter, post-hibernation renaissance, it’s the glorious all-American burger. Just in time for all your burger cravings to kick into high gear, restaurants all over Chicago are doling out burger specials, promos, and new versions of burger favorites.

Fusing burgers with that other patriotic pastime, barbecue, 25 Degrees contrives the best of both worlds: the BBQ brisket burger. Not only is this hefty behemoth perfectly apropos for National Burger Month and Barbecue Month, but it goes to a good cause, with 50% of proceeds going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. So as you dig into the brisket-topped sirloin patty with Cardona cheese, crispy fried onions, arugula, and pineapple-barbecue sauce, you can rest easy knowing you’re being altruistic.

It’s that time of year again. Burger, Bourbon, and Beer nights are back in gear at Publican Quality Meats. The weekly series features two competing burgers, the standard PQM burger vs. a guest chef’s burger, every Tuesday night through July 1. The schedule of guest chefs include Dana Cree (Blackbird) on May 13, Cary Taylor (Big Star) on June 3, Sieger Bayer (Leghorn) on June 17, and Alfredo Nogueira (Analogue) on July 1.

Acadia may be best known for its fine, nautically tinged dining, but chef Ryan McCaskey famously makes a mean burger as well. Inspired by his childhood favorite Burger King burger, the chef fuses guilty pleasure memories with high-class for a new take on his award-winning burger preparation. The double-decker burger comes with housemade bacon, “special sauce,” garlic dill pickles, Gruyère cheese, and smoked cheddar Mornay.

It’s burger time at Rockit Burger Bar and Rockit Bar & Grill. Rockit’s 9th Annual Burger Fest us underway May 12 through May 16, featuring an impressive lineup of decadent burger creations for each day of the week. Things get started with the bulgogi bison burger (Rockit Bar & Grill only) on May 12, followed by the chicken enchilada burger on May 13, the smoky pork burger on May 14, spicy chorizo burger on May 15, and the bacon grilled cheese patty melt burger on May 16.

The new burger of the month at Burger Boss is something a tad offbeat: the Turkey Banh Mi Boss. Fusing Vietnamese sandwich traditions with American comfort food, the burger is made with turkey patties, pickled carrots and radishes, fresh cucumber slices, jalapeños, cilantro, and sriracha hoison mayo.

Sweet onions and Camembert enhance the new limited time special burger at Sophie’s. Served in honor of National Burger Month, with partial proceeds benefiting the Chicago chapter of Meals on Wheels, the burger features Camembert, housemade red onion marmalade, arugula, ramp aioli, and a housemade peppercorn roll. It’s served with truffled fries and housemade pickles.
