Judging by the scent of pumpkin spice in the air, autumn is officially here, and with it comes one of the season’s most venerable festivities: Oktoberfest. This beer-fueled week-long celebration, which runs through October 5-ish, brings about a slew of heady beers and European-inspired specials to bars and restaurants throughout Chicago.

New bars pop up in Chicago faster than ramps in spring, so it takes a special bastion to stand out from the herd. Two such newcomers include a revamped classic and a clandestine cabaret –The California Clipper and Bordel Puncheon Club & Caberet.

Doughnuts have had their time in the sun, but nowadays it’s time for another tire-shaped carb bomb to shine. Bagels have steadily risen up the ranks in doughy popularity, emerging at new spots such as Craft Pizza, BroBagel, and Mindy Segal’s bakery service at HotChocolate.
