Fourth of July Feasts in Chicago

The Fourth of July is nearly here, meaning it’s prime time to partake in patriotic barbecues and all things red, white, and blue. Here are some ideas for Independence Day dining in Chicago.

Normally a multi-course prix fixe affair, Intro gets casual and all-American during the days preceding July 4. The Lincoln Park restaurant, which features a rotating roster of chefs-in-residence, is currently under the direction of Erik Anderson, who will be serving up a good old fashioned barbecue feast July 1 through July 3 during dinner hours. Food stations feature caviar deviled eggs, turnip greens, truffle potato salad, coleslaw, fried chicken with habanero honey, beef brisket, smoked bologna sandwiches, smoked ribs, banana pudding, chocolate bundt cake, and pecan pie.

Pastries are clad in red, white, and blue at Scone City for the Fourth of July. An apt way to kickstart your holiday weekend morning, pastry chef Laurie McNamara has crafted two patriotic scones for the occasion. One savory and one sweet, said scones are a roasted blue potato scone with oven-dried tomato, goat cheese, basil, and thyme; and a strawberry-blueberry scone with blueberry glaze. The scones are available July 3 only.

Nothing like bi-coastal oysters and crawfish boils to celebrate Americana in true nautical style. Shaw’s Crab House will celebrate the holiday this year with East Coast and West Coast oyster specials in the Oyster Bar at both Chicagoland locations. Additionally, the Chicago outpost will host a New Orleans-style crawfish boil on the Fourth with all-you-can-eat shellfish, potatoes, sausage, and all the fixings.

Start the holiday festivities early at River Roast, which is hosting a live musical performance July 2 from Blues legend Dave Specter. Taking place on the riverfront patio, the soulful event is best enjoyed along with River Roast’s craft cocktails and contemporary American fare.

When it’s time for patriotic desserts, Magnolia Bakery fits the bill with some holiday-centric products available for a limited time. Red velvet blueberry cupcakes and stars and stripes cupcakes decorated with red, white, and blue sprinkles are perfect for cupcake-loving patriots, while stars and stripes pies are available in apple, cherry, or blueberry flavors, bedecked with star cut-outs and stripes.
