There’s a Smoky New Beer in Town

By Matt Kirouac

A new beer has rolled into town, rife with heady German flavors and aroma. Tricycle, partly named for the three-pronged collaboration behind it, is a new German ale brewed by Baderbräu in conjunction with The Radler and Atlas Brewing Company.

Baderbräu, as beer geeks may recall, was Chicago’s original craft brew, which rose to acclaim in the ‘90s before trickling out under Goose Island ownership. A Baderbräu renaissance began brewing anew last year under the tutelage of Rob Sama, and since then they’ve added new craft beers to their repertoire, including Oktoberfest and Red Velvet. The original idea for a collaborative brew came when Sama was chatting about smoked beers, a regional specialty most renowned in Bamberg, Germany, with the folks at local Atlas Brewing Company. The Radler soon got into the mix and once the collaboration earned its wheels, per say, it got underway.

Using imported German malt, Tricycle is a smoked altbier smooth enough to not clobber you  over the head with aromatics. Sama describes it as an easily drinkable beer befitting a night-long beer spree, with smoke in the background begetting a smooth, mellow body.
