How to Become a Master Mezcalier
Back-to-school season is a lot more fun when hard liquor is involved, and the only homework of note is drinking. Ravenswood’s preeminent beer and whiskey bar Fountainhead turns its attention to mezcal for a series of Master Mezcalier classes in honor of the Indie Spirits Expo, allowing spirited students to learn a lot more about this south of the border staple.
The Master Mezcalier program entails four levels of progressive courses, the completion of which results in the esteemed title of Master Mezcalier, which is basically like valedictorian of agave. Restaurant and bar workers, or anyone interested in taking their mezcal know-how to the next level are encouraged to attend the classes, which start with the first two level classes on September 29 and October 1.
The first class covers the basics of mezcal production, certification, law, agaves, and origins, as taught by master distiller Douglas French. Next, the second class delves into mixology, exploring the uses and techniques for mezcal in cocktails, presided over by Master Mezcalier graduate and Milagro Tequila Ambassador Jaime Salas.
Learn about classes. The final session of the class series culminates with a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, FYI.
