Sushi Burritos Make a Splash in Chicago

Cultures are colliding as Mexican-Japanese sushi burritos make their debut in Chicago. After catching fire on the East and West Coasts, the latest fusion mash-up has popped up at Sumo Restaurant in Lincoln Park and Freshii locations all over the city.

The first emergence of Chicago’s sushi burrito came via Sumo Restaurant, which put its own spin on the creation with both salmon and tuna varieties. As the name implies, sushi burritos are basically just jumbo make rolls, filled with rice and protein, surrounded by nori instead of a tortilla. At Sumo, each burrito is outfitted with crab salad, cucumber, crab sticks, and sweet potato, rolled with an equal portion of seaweed and rice paper. They’re rolled in foil and sliced in half, ready for handheld eating.

Hot on the heels of Chicago’s sushi burrito premiere, Freshii has implemented some Asian-accented menu offerings with their new “sushiitos.” These sushi burritos come in two varieties, one filled with chicken teriyaki, brown rice, edamame, mushrooms, carrot, cucumber, cabbage, and teriyaki sauce, and the other with kimchi, brown rice, tofu, avocado, carrot, cucumber, cabbage, and lemongrass. Both are wrapped in nori.
