February: The Month of Cider?

By Amy Cavanaugh

February may be the month of Valentine’s Day, but it’s also the month of something a little closer to our hearts – cider. This month there’s a Cider Conference and Cider Summit that will be bringing events and tastings throughout February. So pull out your calendar and start marking down dates.

While the conference, held February 7 and 8, is sold out, you can still get tickets to inaugural Chicago Cider Summit. Held on February 9 at Navy Pier from 11:00 am-7:00 pm, the summit features more than 60 ciders from throughout the U.S., England, Scotland, France, Spain, and New Zealand, plus food pairings. The Midwest is well represented with ciders from Michigan (Virtue Cider, Vander Mill, and others), Wisconsin, and Ohio.

On February 22, 2 Sparrows is bringing in Virtue Cider for a cider pairing dinner. Brewmaster and Founder of Virtue Cider, Greg Hall, will talk through the ciders, which are Red Streak, Lapinette, (both of which you can find around Chicago) and The Mitten, a new cider that’s currently aging in barrels. The menu includes arugula and pear salad with Manchego cheese, crispy chicken with giant white beans, kale and mushrooms, roasted pork loin, and spiced apple pavlova.
