The first time I walked into the Del Toro Tequila Bar, I didn’t know what to expect. A ton of new restaurants were popping up in Pilsen and Bridgeport, each fulfilling its own niche. In addition to Nana and its excellent organic fare about a mile south on Halsted Street, there was also Jason Vincent’s outstanding Nightwood , a mere thirty feet from Del Toro’s front door.

Nightwood (closed)

American cuisine prepared with bold simplicity and care. The menu is hand-written daily, using locally sustainable food options. The interior is hip and trendy, but still cozy and comfortable. It maintains an open kitchen ambiance, a lively patio, and the wine room is warm with the scent of applewood in the air.

Honky Tonk Barbecue

Honky Tonk BBQ serves up Memphis-style barbecue. All of the briskets and ribs are lightly seasoned, allowing the flavor of applewood to spice the meat. Heart-healthy side dishes counter all the cholesterol, including an amazing salad of mixed greens, walnuts and blueberries.

Mundial (closed)

A charmingly tiny and tightly packed restaurant that combines Mexican cuisine with Mediterranean flavor.
